A series of posts with basic tips that come in handy when smoking a pipe: from initial preparation, filling, lightning, smoking, cleaning and more.

With proper smoking and taking care of the pipe, a carbon shield (cake) is slowly accumulating in the chamber. It should not be thicker than 1 (up to max 1.5) mm.

And how to thin it? The “Cake” in the tobacco chamber is thinned with a special tool designed for this (called pipe reamer). It is a gadget that is designed not to damage the inside of the tobacco chamber while reducing the cake evenly to the set thickness.

Two types of cleaning tool (pipe reamer) to remove excess carbon shield (cake).
