Part 7.: Periodic pipe cleaning

A series of posts with basic tips that come in handy when smoking a pipe: from initial preparation, filling, lightning, smoking, cleaning and more.

Periodic cleaning

After a longer period of time, the pipe(s) must also be cleaned generally, because a long time has passed or if the pipe has become tired. The pipe is usually tired when the tobacco has a bitter, sour, short “unpleasant” taste.

Clean the pipe in the same way as after any smoking (regular pipe cleaning), and then use a cleaning (70%) alcohol to clean the inside of the mouthpiece by soaking the pipe cleaner with alcohol. In the same way clean the draft hole, mortise and tenon where the filter is (if it is a filter pipe). Wipe the outside of the mouthpiece with a paper towel soaked in cleaning alcohol to disinfect it.

Do not clean the outside of the bowl (the wooden part) with cleaning alcohol, as it can be discolored and damaged! It can be only polished on the polishing machine and a new protective wax can be aplicated. (this will be described in a separate post).

The pipe can only be lightly wiped with a paper towel inside, and even better is to remove the excess cake with a special tool (the procedure will be described in a separate post).

When the pipe no longer tastes good, then the salt and alcohol method should be used (will be described in a separate post).
